Tina and I have been living throughout the Caribbean now for over 20 years. Small countries and islands have a difficult time producing and delivering consistent water and electric. When living on an island you are at the mercy of the utility companies. Saint Croix really tested my sense of humor with the power outages and loss of water. We would drive home from work to find no power or water, “what a bummer”. The electric company would repair the problem after rotating the power (every 5 Hours) between the towns of Christiansted and Fredricksted. They would fix it, but; you always knew it was just a matter of time before it was off again.
Here in Belize, we get our electric from the fifth largest country in the world, Mexico. Mexico can generate power cheaper and better than any Caribbean country.
San Pedro is hooked to the Mexico grid, the power runs through the country and then under water to the island. If there ever is a problem, Belize has its own generating plants for back up. If Belize were to generate their own power it would be twice the cost with many break downs (no different from other small Caribbean countries) .
( look what I found very common. Just-goggled power outage ) http://www.travel-roatan.com/moving.htm ++ http://www.nowpublic.com/world/power-protests-rattle-roatan
Running a generator gets costly and old quick .
(Electric is one of my favorite utilities!)
People love Belize because it is convenient and fun. I have not lost Internet or water or electric for years. We have had some scheduled outages for a couple minutes here and there. We actually had a problem and they were switching from Mexico to Belize power, and it went very well!
San Pedro has a top of the line desalination water plant, which supplies fresh water to the island (it has been working for years with no interruptions).
The island has 6-7 major grocery stores and a lot of small ones; we also have businesses that deliver chicken, beer, water, soda to our house.
We have good schools, police, fire, and general medical. Doctors make house calls for a moderate price (50U.S), we don’t abuse this service. The community is very much involved in upgrading of services. We have local dentist, and we have dentist, from the states, that come on a semi yearly basis to help out with the school kids of San Pedro (wonderful people). Cuban eye doctors come and do free examinations, terrific service provided. If they can’t fix the problem here, they normally will fly the citizens to Cuba for medical help (everything free). One of my friends went years ago and had emergency cataract surgery, great time and wonderful people he said.
We have many U.S. doctors coming down and helping with the development of services threw our new Poly Clinic. Once you get here, It won’t take long for you to see the island is a family oriented place, scattered with retirees, and now a younger 40-50 crowd.
Having lived in different parts of the Caribbean it gives me insight that not many have. I don’t take the services for granted, clearly we are blessed. Many places in the states don ‘t have these types of services.
This information is imperative for an investor to know. This trend shows no sign of slowing; Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama had their chance, now it is time for Belize .
Really surprised it took so long for the secret to get out. Belize will continue to be the place to be, for sometime. There is no inheritance tax, no capitol gains, no racial tension, tax free retirement program, international banks, very low property tax, and reasonable immigration policies. When choosing a Caribbean residence it is paramount you analyze Infrastructure, Services and Community.

Tim and I headed out to meet ken and Martha around 5:30 PM. It was raining, but; I wanted to get in the golf cart and go. We got a little wet, but we made it over to the Mayan Princess. We sat out on the veranda and had pre- lobsterfest appetizer and drinks until the rain stopped. We decided to head over to Central Park around 6:30-7PM. It turned out to be a beautiful night.

T.P was on stage singing.
The music and lobster dishes were enjoyed by all. Lobster Ice cream was a first for me. (Not a fan.)
We have to give it to the Rojo Lounge, It was very creative. You could have tried a lobster Mojito or lobster cheesecake. NOT ME!!
I would rather stick with the lobster poppers (good, but never enough), lobster kabobs, lobster tacos, lobster Pita sandwiches, lobster dips, grilled lobster, lobster ceviche (Nice), lobster pasta (my favorite), lobster pizza (Tim, not a fan) and shrimp coctail.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there.
I want to give a special thanks to my dad for being who he was. He passed away on March 27, 2009, so this will be the first fathers day that I will not be able to call him up and just say hello.
Happy Father’s Day to George Callanan (Tim’s father)
Father’s Day is a day honoring fathers, celebrated on the third Sunday of June in 52 of the world’s countries and on other days elsewhere.
History
Father’s Day is a celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Father’s Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities.
The first observance of Father’s Day is believed to have been held on July 5, 1908 in a church located in Fairmont, West Virginia, by Dr. Robert Webb of West Virginia at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South of Fairmont.[1] [2] The church still exists under the name of Central United Methodist Church.
Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington thought independently of the holiday one Sunday in 1909 while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church at Spokane,[3] and she arranged a tribute for her father on June 19, 1910. She was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father’s Day observance to honor all fathers.
It took many years to make the holiday official. In spite of support from the YWCA, the YMCA and churches, it ran the risk of disappearing from the calendar.[4] Where Mother’s Day was met with enthusiasm, Father’s Day was met with laughter.[4] The holiday was gathering attention slowly, but for the wrong reasons. It was the target of much satire, parody and derision, including jokes from the local newspaper Spokesman-Review.[4] Many people saw it as just the first step in filling the calendar with mindless promotions like “Grandparents’ Day“, “Professional Secretaries’ Day“, etc., all the way down to “National Clean Your Desk Day.”[4]
A bill was introduced in 1913,[5] US President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea in 1924,[citation needed] and a national committee was formed in the 1930s by trade groups in order to legitimize the holiday.[6] It was made a federal holiday when President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966.
In addition to Father’s Day, International Men’s Day is celebrated in many countries, most often on November 19.

Well we are only hours away from lobsterfest and we are getting pretty excited. This is the third year and this event is becoming an annual tradition in San Pedro, Belize. Lobster season is from june 15 – Feb 14th. Lobsterfest celebrates the beginning of the lobster fishing season. this outdoor festival pairs a spectacular array of lobster cusine with live music. .
The ever popular ‘Lobsterfest Town Block Party’ will be the grand finale of Lobsterfest 2009 on Saturday June 20th, 2009.
Many professional people here on the island work around the major holidays. We rarely get adequate time to thank these different people for their contributions to our everyday life and success.
We hope you enjoy the next few posts as much as we will. This is a gathering of people that have one strong thing in common, “the love of San Pedro”. We are confident we will see all sectors of the business community, elected officials, long time investors, tourists and locals that call San Pedro their home.
The Lobsterfest has been proven to be a great way to bring the community together. It takes a lot of long hours, hard work and dedication to bring this event together. Thanks to the San Pedro Business Association and all those that volenteried to help make this happen.

The Blog Party and Stuff Swap was a hugh success. I can tell Laurie put a lot of time and effort into this event and a big thanks goes out to her and those who pitched in to help. The rumor is that the San Pedro Lobster fest is being attended by Frommers Travel.
This was the pre party event so that the bloggers could pick up their press passes for lobster fest. There will be a booth set up along with dozens of others in the park today. This is a great opportunity for all the bloggers out there.
Just checking out the goods.

These jeans fit perfect. “I found them on the swap table. Last year I came to one of these swaps and I left a pair of jeans just like these. I had lost a few pounds and could not wear them anymore. Cindy ended up with the leans. Cindy lots a few pounds and I found a few. Little did I know these where my jeans to begin with. The koozie was a bonus.”
